Hyderabad, Telangana

Hyderabad sits on the Deccan Plateau at roughly 500 metres, a city of about ten million people shaped by four centuries of Qutb Shahi and Nizamate rule. The old city south of the Musi River holds the densest concentration of monuments — mosques, tombs, a fort — while the newer districts spread north around Hussain Sagar lake. The cuisine here, particularly the biryani and the slow-cooked haleem, has a documented court lineage that makes eating in Hyderabad a genuine historical act.

Day 1: Heritage and Cultural Exploration

Morning Begin at Charminar, the four-minaret gateway built by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah in 1591 to mark the founding of his new city and, according to one account, to give thanks for the end of a plague epidemic. The structure frames the old city in every direction. From there, walk into Laad Bazaar — the covered market running west from Charminar's base — for lacquered bangles, pearl dealers, and attar shops that have occupied this street since the Qutb Shahi period.

Afternoon Lunch on Hyderabadi biryani at one of the established old-city restaurants. Afterwards, visit Mecca Masjid, begun under Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah in 1617 and completed under Mughal governor Aurangzeb in 1694 — construction spanned nearly eighty years and multiple dynasties.

Evening Walk the local markets at dusk and stop for Irani chai with Osmania biscuits — the chai-house culture here traces to Iranian migrants who arrived in the early 20th century and set up the distinctive café style still operating today.

Day 2: Historical Landmarks and City Attractions

Morning Visit Golconda Fort, the granite citadel that served as the Qutb Shahi capital before Hyderabad was founded. The fort's acoustic system — a clap at the entrance gate carries audibly to the pavilion at the summit 120 metres above — was an intentional security feature, not an accident of construction.

Afternoon Move to the Qutb Shahi Tombs, the necropolis of the dynasty's seven rulers set in a garden compound about a kilometre north of the fort. The tombs combine Persian domes with Hindu decorative carving in a way that reflects the court's deliberate syncretic policy. Lunch at a local restaurant nearby.

Evening Drive to Hussain Sagar, the 16th-century reservoir built by Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah. Take the boat to the monolithic Buddha statue on Gibraltar Rock at the lake's centre — the statue was carved from a single granite boulder weighing about 350 tonnes and installed in 1992 after an earlier attempt to install it in 1990 ended with it sinking during placement.

Day 3: Leisure and Recreation

Option 1 — Family Entertainment Spend the day at Ramoji Film City, a working studio complex of about 1,666 acres that holds a Guinness record as the world's largest integrated film studio. Tours run through active sets, backlot streets built to resemble different periods and cities, and production facilities.

Option 2 — City Exploration Visit Birla Mandir, a white marble temple built in 1976 on a granite hill with views across the city. Then spend two to three hours at the Salar Jung Museum, which houses the personal collection of Mir Yousuf Ali Khan, the Nizam's prime minister, assembled over decades — around 43,000 objects including manuscripts, jade, textiles, and one of the more unusual European clock collections in Asia. End at Shilparamam, an arts and crafts village in Madhapur where artisans from across Telangana and neighbouring states demonstrate and sell traditional work.
