Udaipur, Mt. Abu & Jalore: Rajasthan's Western Arc
This route moves through western Rajasthan in a loose southward arc before returning north, covering terrain most Rajasthan itineraries skip entirely. Udaipur anchors the opening — lake, palace, marble pavilions. Mt. Abu offers the only true hill station in Rajasthan, sitting above the plains at roughly 1,200 metres, with the Dilwara temples as its centrepiece. Jalore is the circuit's quiet discovery: a granite-ridge fort that once held against both Alauddin Khalji's army and time, and still does.
Day 1 — Udaipur: Heritage & Lakes
Morning: Explore the City Palace Complex — the largest palace complex in Rajasthan, built in stages by the Mewar rulers from 1553 onwards, with galleries tracing the full arc of the dynasty.
Afternoon: Visit Saheliyon-ki-Bari, the 18th-century garden of the maids of honour, known for its symmetrical marble pavilions and hydraulic fountains fed by a gravity system from Lake Fateh Sagar.
Evening: Sunset boat cruise on Lake Pichola, passing Jag Mandir — the island palace that gave Mughal prince Khurram shelter when he rebelled against his father Jahangir in 1623.
Stay: Udaipur.
Day 2 — Udaipur to Mt. Abu: Hill Station Ascent
Morning: Drive to Mt. Abu via NH27 (approximately 3.5 hours). Optional stop at Haldighati Museum, marking the 1576 battle site where Maharana Pratap met Akbar's forces.
Afternoon: Tour the Dilwara Jain Temples — five temples built between the 11th and 13th centuries, with marble carving of a density and precision that took some structures over 14 years to complete.
Evening: Panoramic valley views at Guru Shikhar, the highest point in the Aravalli range at 1,722 metres, followed by a lakeside walk at Nakki Lake.
Stay: Mt. Abu.
Day 3 — Mt. Abu to Jalore: Granite Fort & History
Morning: Drive down to Jalore (approximately 2.5 hours via Sirohi).
Afternoon: Trek up Jalore Fort (Swarna Giri — Hill of Gold) to walk the ancient ramparts, visit the Jain shrines within the fort walls, and see the cannons still positioned on the battlements. The fort held out against Alauddin Khalji's siege for two years in the early 14th century before finally falling in 1311.
Evening: Visit Topekhana, a historic structure in the town below featuring columns and stone carvings, thought to date from the fort's period of greatest use.
Stay: Jalore.
Day 4 — Jalore: Sundha Mata & Onward
Morning: Drive to Sundha Mata Temple (approximately 100 km from Jalore), a Chamunda Devi temple set into a rocky hillside above the Aravalli foothills, reached by ropeway. The views extend across the valley to the plains beyond.
Afternoon: Depart for onward connections — return to Udaipur (approximately 4.5 hours) or head north to Jodhpur (approximately 3 hours).
